Genshin Impact is a free-to-play, open-world action RPG developed by miHoYo, the company behind HoYoverse. It follows the Traveler’s search for a missing twin across Teyvat, with exploration, story quests, and elemental combat making up most of the game.

The Story: What Happened to Your Twin?

Two siblings arrive from another world, only to be separated by an Unknown God while trying to leave Teyvat. You choose which twin to play as, then set out to find the other with Paimon, your floating companion.

Finding your sibling is the long-term goal, but the people you meet have problems of their own. You get pulled into local disputes, investigate ancient secrets, and seek answers from the Archons, the gods associated with Teyvat’s seven elemental nations.

Those elements are Anemo (wind), Geo (earth), Electro (electricity), Dendro (nature), Hydro (water), Pyro (fire), and Cryo (ice). They shape both the story and the way you fight.

The main storyline runs through Archon Quests. Side quests fill in the smaller stories, from a character’s personal troubles to the history of a place you might otherwise walk past.

What Do You Actually Do in Genshin Impact?

Much of your time goes into exploring. You climb a ridge, spot a chest below, and glide down to investigate. Along the way, you collect cooking ingredients, solve puzzles, and find materials for upgrading your characters.

Combat uses a party of up to four characters. You control one at a time, switching between them to use their attacks and abilities.

The trick is getting their elements to work together. Apply Pyro and Electro to an enemy, for example, and you trigger Overloaded, an explosion that deals Pyro damage. Hydro and Cryo can freeze susceptible enemies, giving you a chance to attack.

A stronger team is about more than having four powerful characters. Healing, shields, and abilities that remain active after switching can make a big difference.

Co-op becomes available at Adventure Rank 16, allowing up to four players to tackle eligible activities together. Cross-platform play is supported, although many story sections are solo-only and some quests temporarily prevent co-op. You also need an internet connection when playing alone.

Is Genshin Impact Free, or Do You Need to Pay?

You can play the available main story and explore the open world without buying anything. You will still encounter progression requirements, such as completing earlier quests or reaching a particular Adventure Rank.

The paid side mainly revolves around Wishes, Genshin’s gacha system for obtaining random characters and weapons. Gameplay rewards include Primogems, which you can exchange for the Fates used to make Wishes. You can also purchase Genesis Crystals and convert them into Primogems.

Banners have guarantee rules, often called pity, so the results are not purely random forever. Those rules vary, making the banner details worth reading before spending.

Progression also means upgrading weapons, talents, and Artifacts. Many repeatable activities require Original Resin to claim their rewards; it replenishes over time.

You do not need every new character to enjoy the game. Learning how your existing team works is a better starting point.
